The women featured in this documentary are a clear example of how the United States has dealt with political dissidents and those who have fought for a right they believe in which is freedom for their nation. Most Americans are not aware that there were people serving time in U.S. prisons for those causes, let alone women. The American federal government has oppressed those who fight for the island's independence in many ways apart from only imprisonment. They have spied on Puerto Rican citizens with phone wiretappings, photo surveillance, and infiltration of political parties. To this day the United States government does not recognize ever imprisoned any Puerto Rican political prisoners. Isabel Rosado, Lolita Lebron and Dylcia Pagan have become a symbol of that repression and how these issues have played out.
This documentary will highlight the women's connection to Puerto Rican history and show the trajectory of this to today's national security issues in the U.S. Currently, we are living in a Homeland Security induced frenzy that American citizens can relate to. With the issue of having civil liberties taken away, the subject matter in this documentary transcends across the border not only to Puerto Ricans and/or people of color but to every citizen living in this country. This clearly shows that at this point the U.S. can mistreat any American citizen by taking away their civil rights, especially with laws such as the Patriot Act and Patriot Act II.
